“Finding Strength in the Storm”
“The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” – Psalm 46:11 (ESV)
Life has a way of throwing us into unexpected storms. Sometimes they come as whispers — a small inconvenience, a delay in plans. Other times, they come roaring — a diagnosis, a betrayal, a loss that shakes us to our core. In those moments, our hearts can feel unsteady, like a boat on turbulent waters.
Psalm 46 is a powerful reminder that no matter how fierce the storm, God is with us. Verse 11 declares, “The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”
Let’s pause and let that truth sink in: The Lord of hosts is with us. The same God who commands heaven’s armies, who spoke the world into existence, who parted the Red Sea and calmed the raging storm on the Sea of Galilee — He is with you, right now.
And not only is He with you, but He is your refuge. A refuge is a safe place, a shelter, a hiding place where we are protected from the chaos around us. When everything feels out of control, God is our steady anchor.
Finding Strength in Him
When you face trials, strength is not found in pretending everything is fine or mustering up your own courage. Strength is found in surrender — in running to God and letting Him hold you.
A Personal Reflection
There have been seasons in my life when the storm felt too strong — times when I wondered if I’d make it through. But every single time, God’s presence became my lifeline. Sometimes He calmed the storm around me, and sometimes He calmed me in the middle of the storm.
You might be in the middle of your own storm today. Maybe it’s one no one else sees. Remember this: your storm doesn’t scare God. He is with you, fighting for you, and covering you with His peace.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being my refuge and strength. When the storms of life feel too heavy, help me to run to You instead of trying to carry everything on my own. Remind me that You are near, You are in control, and You will never leave me. Calm my heart today, and let Your presence be my peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Reflection Questions & Journal Prompts
1. Where do you usually turn when life gets hard?
Take a moment to honestly write down what you run to first when storms hit — is it prayer, friends, distractions, worry? How might God be inviting you to turn to Him instead?
2. How do you picture God as your refuge?
Journal what it means for God to be your “safe place.” Is it like a strong tower? A quiet hiding place? A comforting embrace? Describe it in detail.
3. What storm are you facing right now?
Write down what feels heavy on your heart. Then, beside it, write a prayer asking God to step in and be your strength and shelter.
4. When has God been your strength before?
Reflect on a past situation where you saw God’s faithfulness carry you through. How can remembering that moment build your faith right now?
5. Be still and listen.
Spend 5-10 quiet minutes with no distractions. Write down anything the Lord brings to mind — a word, a picture, a verse, or a sense of peace.
